Barren Beauty

This image of southeast Utah contains a wide variety of canyons, plateaus, and rock strata that combine to create a wide range of colors and textures. In the lower right are the Green River (running the height of the image) and the Colorado River (entering from the right), and between them lies Canyon Lands National Park.  Interstate 70 runs along the upper edge, then bisects the San Rafael Swell (two thousand square miles of narrow, circuitous canyons, scenic cliffs and towering buttes) in the upper left. The golden region in the middle is a highly reflective (mostly bare soil) Jurassic age sedimentary  layer.  This gives way to the purples and blue bands that of are the result of different rock layers from the more recent Cretaceous period that rising up in the upper right and lower left portions of the image.
