Larryville

Lawrence is in northeast Kansas on the banks of the Kansas River, about 40 miles west of Kansas City. It was founded in 1854 for the New England Emigrant Aid Company by Charles Robinson and was a center of anti-slavery sentiment. On August 21, 1863, pro-slavery forces led by William Quantrill burned most of the houses and commercial buildings in Lawrence and killed 150 - 200 men. The city rebuilt, and in 1866, using a charter granted by the Kansas Legislature and with the donation of 40 acres of land on Mount Oread by Charles Robinson, the University of Kansas was founded. Since then the city has grown to nearly 100,000 people representing a diverse mix of college, suburban, and rural cultures.
